I would suggest that in the US, we actually get dogs that are truly red or mahogany in coloration. I had one in a litter. Zomarick’s website has a picture of some red dogs, with one dog on the far right actually reaching this Verboten color! The really, really dark ones were actually mistaken for Liver, as you can read about in the post on Don of Gerwn.
But it should also be mentioned that the very pale coloration predominates in Europe. The dark colors in that set of UK retrievers are very rare in that country.

If this type becomes the dominant type of golden retriever in the US, the breed might as well be removed from the Sporting group forever. In fact, it should trade places with the Standard poodle, which is decent water dog with very high trainability, and join the nonsporting group. Let’s hope that this doesn’t happen. These dogs are light in color, which isn’t a major problem. Variance in coloration isn’t a bad thing.
The problem is that these dogs are built all wrong. I wonder if hip problems appear in this type of golden more than the American show type or the working type. Because an 80 pound male golden running around with that density of bone and that shortness of leg is going to stress his joints.
Just wait until the puppy mills discover how easy it is to sell a “white” golden retriever on the internet! Oh wait, they already have!
