   This breed was crossed with the Curly Coated to create the American Water Spaniel. The Curly owners I know just seem so much more down to earth and friendly than most. I can’t say I like the look of the Water Spaniel, but they certainly seem to learn quickly. Just like Retrievers.

   Does that Irish Water Spaniel look like it is undershot? It seems like it from what I can see that it is. Like it has a grimacing smile. ;-)

     They are a much older breed than the retrievers. In fact, they were once referred to as the Irish retriever or Shannon water spaniel.

       They look really close to poodles. No offense to owners of either type. JUST AN OBSERVATION. ;-)

         They shed; poodles don’t.

         They both descend from the old-style water dogs.

   IWS aren’t and shouldn’t be circus dogs – although they can be. Poodles are and can be and have been for such a long time circus dogs – and are so much more.

   I adore both breeds – and will always have a poodle. Why’s that?

   I didn’t consider Spencer a “circus” dog. There was nothing infra dig about what he was doing — he looks like a cool guy. Nice looking dog.

   Irish Water Spaniels have been around for awhile — they are one of the founding breeds of the AKC.

   A comment about shedding. True, IWS shed a bit more than poodles, but they’re nothing like labs or goldens in the shedding department. In my house, every week or so, I tend to find a few “dust bunnies” of brown curly fur in the corners.

   People constantly confuse IWS with poodles, even poodle owners. Just take a look at the IWS’ “rattail” and naked neck — there’s nothing like that on a healthy poodle. If you see what you think is a chocolate poodle, look at the tail again — you might be seeing an IWS, which only come in “liver.”
