Here’s a term I don’t like

September 29, 2009 by SWestfall3

coydog

Dogote.

Supposedly, this is what happens when a dog coyote mates with a domestic dog bitch. I hate the term, and thus, I shall never use it.

I suppose someone was being cute and tried to get the terms to match tigon and liger. However, ligers and tigons are very different animals, even though they are the result of crossing the same two species.  Ligers tend to get quite large, while tigons tend to be quite small.

I’ve not seen any evidence that coydogs with dog mothers are different from coydogs with coyote mothers.

So to me, they are all coydogs, and that’s the term I’m going to use.

I don’t pronounce the final e in coyote, so dogote sounds like “dog-oat,” which makes absolutely no sense.

I also don’t use the term “coywolf.” The proper terms for wild animals that are of  permutations of that cross are the red wolf, Eastern North American wolf  (C. l. lycaon), and the Eastern coyote.

Never actually heard the term “Dogote” before. My fingers don’t even like typing it out, they wanted to type “dogoat.” I don’t pronounce the -E either and I get weird looks from the city slickers here for that. Honestly though, why not just call it a coyote-dog hybrid? It’s a wonderful example of the true use of the word “hybrid.” I find myself habitually correcting people who think that Lab/poodle and pug/beagle and whatever other mixed breed out there is a hybrid. It’s not.

Interesting article on why Ligers are so big.

So they think it’s imprinted genes now?

I wasn’t sure what caused, because I had seen two different theories about why they got so large– one of which is that they were throwbacks to the cave lion.

I don’t know what the big deal is. I have a beautiful coydog or dogote (call it what you want). fact is, he is half coyote. He is sweet, loves all domestic animals, and he listens. doesn’t like to play like most dogs. he has ran with horses and ran from cats. the name coydog or dogote should not be offensive. I’m so proud to have such a sweet dog. I found him by a dumpster and he was all bones. I said to myself that he looks like a coyote, might try to kill me when he heals. took him to the vet; vet said you gotta coydog. point being he grew into a great pet that I plan to keep for years. so, who cares. i have a dog, you have a dog. lables are nothing but calling the kettle black. if you are smart you wouldnt give a shit. shut up. and tell people you have a dog. nobody knows the difference if you say “yes, i have a dog” (not a coydog or a dogote, then you have to explain*like your crap smells better than thers). are you not embarrassed?? or pride?? I love my dog because I am proud to keep such a sweet dog. If he was a wolf then I would still say this is my dog. because, thats what they are. frig’n dogs. get over yourself.
    its a dog.
