My original guess was swift fox. Google-fu led me to the correct answer, but I’ll just leave my incorrect original guess up. :)
I’d have to say that looks an awful lot like the gray fox I used to handle at a wildlife rehab hospital/museum. One of them was so sweet- he’d “talk” to us, climb up our shoulders to sniff our ears, and really liked attention. He was the highlight of my volunteer days- I don’t remember how he ended up being such a fan of people- he may have been one of those who had been imprinted on people and that’s why we couldn’t release him back into the wild.
In California, they’re quite shy and are getting pushed out of their territories by red foxes who are much more aggressive.
I can tell you that in East, the Urocyon gray foxes are much more aggressive towards reds, and reds avoid them at all costs. They are about the same size here, with the grays being a bit stockier and have a bit more powerful jaws.
When you say gray fox, you mean in the genus Urocyon, right? The ones that can climb trees.
BTW, this is a fox in the genus Vulpes.
