   I saw them on an Animal Planet show. All they fed the hippo was sweet potatoes. Nothing else. When the vet came out, he was all, “Um, yeah, she needs to gain several hundred pounds, STOP FEEDING HER YAMS YOU IDIOTS” except much nicer. They didn’t listen. She was physically and mentally immature when she shouldn’t have been.

   They were annoying individuals who prolly had no business raising a hippo.

     I saw this show last Christmas I believe.

     They wanted her to get big so she would have a calf.

     And they found her a bull, but that bull wound up shot for raiding farmer’s fields.

     There was a game ranger who told the camera person that he didn’t think it would end well with Jessica.

     I’ve not heard anything since about the hippo.

     Did you hear about Pablo Escobar’s pet hippos?

     They went wild and took over the ranch, and a trio went wild in the Magdalena River.

     There was also pygmy hippo that was shot in Australia a few weeks ago. Pig hunters thought it was a big pig. It had been released from an eccentric millionaire’s game park that went under.

     People don’t need pet hippos. That’s one animal that has evolved to hate us.

   I think it speaks volumes that Animal Planet would run a pro Jessica program but did not run anything about the negatives whereas they daily run programs that would make one believe all dog or pet owners in the US are evil abusing monsters.

     APL is all about anthropomorphizing animals to a stupid degree and pandering to the AR fringe (Whale Wars is a prime example). I can’t stand to watch their ‘nature documentaries’ any more — they’re so sensationalist and dumbed down.

       I like the”critter almost ate me” shows and the River Monsters show.

       I don’t really like the Dogs 101 show at all. It’s too encyclopedic, and it’s not in depth enough.

       But every once in a while they show something awesome. I saw one about wolves and caribou a few years ago that was superb. The Wild Russia series that was on this summer was pretty good. I wish it had gone on for a bit longer.

       I wish Steve Irwin hadn’t had that run in with the stingray– that was what, five years ago?

       That was my favorite show, even if he got things wrong and was tempting fate (and occasionally breaking the law.)

       Animal Planet did a show on the animals in the Roman circuses that I had great hopes for, but it was awful.

       I miss the old BBC and Survival Anglia nature documentaries that I used to watch all the time. To me, it’s not a nature show unless I hear a British accent!

       Remember when they used to run “That’s My Baby” where they would have various people who had bred their animals and follow them through the pregnancy and birth? I remember a horse, an alpaca (I think), a ferret, a couple of cats, and several dogs of different breeds. They’d never run something like that now. “Breed All About It” was good, too. “Dogs 101″ does not impress me.

         I watched the That’s My Baby show for a while. I remember the golden retriever episode. The breeder had a nice field line golden, but she didn’t breed from that dog. No, she had to breed her bear-like stud dog to her bear-like bitch because that “improves the breed.” LOL. I think there are at least 40 or 50 episodes of that show.

         I think the reason why it’s not on anymore is that some episodes had breeders on there who were raw feeding their dogs. You can’t have a show on like that when dog food is one of the things you advertise. It makes no business sense.

         Breed All About It was excellent, especially the first ten or so episodes. The pointer episode and the border collie episode were my favorite.

         I also loved Patricia McConnell’s Pet Line show. I hated when that show got canceled.

   According to the archeological findings hippos lived in Europe in England ab. 500.000 years ago.
