Angel risked her life to save an 11-year-old boy.
Call her Austin Forman’s “guardian Angel.”
Austin Forman was sent out to bring in some firewood, when a cougar launched itself at him.
Angel, the family golden retriever was at his side, and the brave dog launched a counter-offensive against the cat. The cougar and dog then fought in the backyard.
Of course, a golden retriever isn’t much match for a cougar, and Austin Forman raced into the house where he got his mother to call 9-1-1. An RCMP constable was on the scene in less than a minute. He shot the cat twice, but it still continued to chew on the dog.
A third shot dispatched the cat, but its jaws were still embedded in Angel’s face.
Angel was very lucky that the cat didn’t get a good grip on the dog’s neck. Otherwise, it would have been a very different story.
Lucky for the cougar it wasn’t the aggressive type of Golden. ;-)
This Golden is a real hero but I don’t understand why the cougar attacked them. I am glad that there aren’t any wild animal around our place.
We don’t have cougars, but we do have coyotes, black bears, and bobcats. Only coyotes can be a potential threat to a dog. Bears will run from people and dogs, and bobcats fear dogs.
The cougar probably attacked the golden because cougars have learned that dogs are very good to eat. Originally, cougars were called cowardly because they would run from any dog. That’s because wolves often drove cougars away, and a cougar couldn’t tell the difference between a dog and a wolf. Now, the cougars have figured out that dogs aren’t wolves and are easy prey.
Leopards have always eaten jackals, and they find dogs just as tasty. Leopards have been known to go dog hunting, even when other prey is available.
Amur (“Siberian”) tigers are also big on eating dogs. Amur tigers avoid people as a general rule. It is very rare for one to become a maneater. Howver, they have been known to approach armed men just to take the dog walking at their sides. (Almost always this dog is a laika, which used to be run in small packs to hunt the tigers.)
What an appropriate name for this loyal friend!
