Wonderful dogs and unbelievable weather in the Borders (Which is how I stumbled across your video).
Dogs and snow make a great combination, except when it comes to the getting home part. With a long haired GSD, as I have, a good 30 minutes of untangling and drying is usually involved. A little work for so much pleasure is nothing to ask though.
Ah, the TRUE beauty of the Labrador Retriever…
This is how I untangle and dry my Lab after a romp in the snow:
“Shake!…. Good boy.”
(Sometimes with the flattie I need to check the toes for snowballs and run a towel down her back, but she’s almost as easy.)
Snowballs are a big problem.
And they don’t come out as easily as you’d think.
The St. John’s water dog’s short coat was recognized by W.E. Cormack, the first man to cross the whole island of Newfoundland on foot in 1822:
“The dogs are admirably trained as retrievers in fowling, and are otherwise useful. The smooth or short haired dog is preferred because in frosty weather the long haired kind become encumbered with ice on coming out of the water.”
