Although these sharks have never killed anyone, these particular sharks weigh about 400 pounds. The species can weigh over 900 pounds, so they are not exactly small fry.

Yes, the salmon shark is in the Lamnidae family, the family commonly known in English as the mackerel sharks. This family includes the aforementioned great white, both species of mako, and porbeagle, the salmon shark’s closest relative.
Salmon sharks are found only in the North Pacific. Porbeagles are found in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean, as well as parts of the South Atlantic, South Pacific, and Southern Indian Oceans. Both species are in the genus Lamna, with the porbeagle as L. nasus and the L. ditropis. In the US, the convention is to call L. nasus the porbeagle, but because the shark was the species most familiar to the Europeans, it is often known simply as the “mackerel shark.”
The porbeagle in US is considered a species of concern, but the salmon shark can be caught as a sport fish in Alaska.
