This has to be my favorite historical painting of a golden retriever, for the dog in it really captures what I think the breed is and should be.
The dog appears to be retrieving a wood pigeon, which are a bit larger than the typical feral rock dove or city pigeon. They are giants compared to our little mourning doves.
