I’ve been wondering a bit lately about captive breeding programs for rare animals like tigers.
You often hear it said how certain types of crossbred tigers cannot be used in wild repopulation efforts because they are not ‘pure’ strains of a specific type.
I don’t really understand why not? Wouldn’t a bengal/siberian mix fill the same ecological niche (and interbreed with the wild tigers in the area) just as well as a pure one?
I wonder this, because wild African Cheetahs are so inbred… but aren’t there other subspecies out there that could be crossed with them in order to improve their diversity? I think that’d be anathema to most captive breeding groups, though.
You raise a good point.
You know what they did with Florida Panthers?
They augmented their gene pool by adding Texas cougars.
