   What next. If you want to look at a “designer” dog with a very long history, several hundred years in fact look at what is called a Lurcher in the UK. These are a hybrids where one side is always a gaze hound of some kind crossed into another breed. If you watch close at the end of the movie 13th Warrior there is a Lurcher that is a cross between and English Greyhound and a Irish Red Setter. Lurchers are bred to hunt the European Hare in the UK.

     Yep.

     And another is the longdog, which is a cross between two sight hound breeds.

     The last wolf in Scotland was killed by a longdog (probably a greyhound/deerhound cross).

     Lurcher people have their own “recipes” for creating the dogs they want. Some use some strain of terrier (usually Bedlingtons). Others use Staffordshire bull terriers. And others used collie-types.

   What is interesting is the Bedlington Terrier, or “Lamby Dogs” as they where once know in ratting rings in Victorian England where themselves developed from a lurcher. As you know I have Irish Terriers (IT) and I have seen photo’s Lurchers bred from a IT crossed to a whippet a very interesting combination.

   It is interesting how things work out. retrieverman you mentioned Longdogs a term I have not heard of till now. I quickly educated myself about Longdogs in the process of doing so I learned of a Celtic folk band called “Show of Hands” one of their songs is titled “longdog” I was able to review some of their music on Youtube and found a very nice modern Celtic folk band and their music is available through iTunes. I would have never learned of them except for your mention of Longdogs. Thank you!

     I keep longdogs, somewhat more exotic versions than your typical cross: Saluki/Afghan crosses. I also have two Azawakh/Sloughi crosses from a friends oops litter.

   That dogs looks the same as every other generic ‘doodle’ I’ve seen. Those ‘designer’ Poodle mixes all look the same to me.

   Jess what an interesting combination. In a way the Azawakh/Sloughi combination I would consider a natural one because dogs of this gaze hound type where passed back and forth across Northern African into the near-east for thousands of years.

     Azawakh and Sloughi have been separated by the Sahara for a long time. Azawakh are from the Sahel and Sloughi are North African. They may have a related origin. I tend to put Azawakh and Sloughi into a different slot than Afghan/Saluki/Tazi/Taigan. I think Azawakh are probably related to the Africanis landrace and possibly Basenji as well.
