This was filmed in Dolomites, even though it is supposed to take place in British Columbia. That’s why they are running Beaucerons after the bears. Yes, that’s Bart the Bear.

Yeah, I love this movie, BUT, I AM a stickler for accuracy in depicting animals, ESPECIALLY dogs, and using inaccurate breeds for the time or place is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. The Airdale on a bear hunt? Absolutely! They were often(and still are) utilized as “catch dogs” to help fight dangerous quarry at bay. But frikkin’ BEUCERON’S??? A French HERDING dog??? With trailhound voices dubbed in the background? C’mon Jean Jacque, what were you thinking? I actually worked on a T. V. series some years back, and had the chance to fight to get accurate hound breeds utilized in some Appalachian hunting scenes–despite my apoplectic efforts, I failed to keep AKC Bloodhounds from being portrayed as deer hounds, although I managed to have some minor influence in the end and encouraged the use of American trailhound breeds and a Catahoula for bit parts–it was a VERY frustrating experience for me at the time(but humorous now in hindsight after all these years!), but I found out how often incredibly ignorant most Hollywood directors are of animals(no matter how wonderfully nice and knowledgable they might be otherwise), and how being a more convincing bullshi**er will get you parts over accuracy every time(i. e. Bloodhound trainer…)!!! It has always slayed me how nit-picking Hollywood folk will be about costumes, accents, little tiny, barely noticeable props of all kinds, and then blatantly use the wrong kind/species of animals–something EVERYONE notices(why actors quote how you avoid scenes with animals and kids if at all possible, as they always steal the scene!)–just makes no sense at all! It is little wonder why the viewing public continues to be so animal ignorant as well……
