One little warning: it’s probably not a good idea to teach a dog to hunt a lazer pointer. Lots of dogs then learn to hunt any light that is reflected on the floor, such as when the sun is reflected through a window or glass door. I don’t think people fully appreciate how strongly obsessive hunting behavior can be in some dogs, but it can be enough to drive you insane.
I know this to be true because I spent 13 years with a golden retriever who took that last part of her breed’s name to a very extreme level.
Playing with lazer with a pup affects the dog’s brain, making him biochemically hooked on hunting light spots. Lazer makes your dog stupid and you crazy, seen this happening so many times.
Zelda goes crazy the few times we’ve brought out the laser pointer, but hasn’t become obsessed. Yet. Maybe because she’s too busy being obsessed with other things, like sticks and tennis balls…
