And I can tell you that those quail you buy for hunting preserves are often tamer than any chicken.
That means they have no reason to be afraid of you or a dog– or a fox or a hawk.

It is too bad introduced/released bobwhite don’t carry over at near the rates that pheasants do. Ringnecks are from Russia, put here just to shoot, but after a season, they run ( and mate) like rabbits and will barely hold for a dog. I think most people consider them basically native by now.
Using at least a few raised gamebirds (quailtards?) is unfortunately necessary to the survival of retrieving breeds as we know them. You can’t have one without the other (unless you trap your own feral rock pigeons).
