It’s mainly cultural. You will see Salukis with belts around the waist as well, to ‘help it develop a good tuck.’

Anyone who is interested in country of origin Salukis should spend some time on Sir T’s site.

Interestingly, there seems to be no tradition of cropping the further east you go. I do not think I’ve ever seen a cropped Afghan, Taigan or Tazi.
