   Pretty obvious that the one on the left is the show type, although this looks like a young dog with lots of puppy fluff which should be stripped out to reveal the adult coat.

   I appreciate both strains in this breed, but my own English Cocker may be a mix of the two types. His head piece is more like that of a show type and he has more hair than is common in a working type, but far less than that of pure show strain. His body is leaner and longer than is typical of a show type and his athleticism is complimented by his incredible drive.

   On the left would be the show-type and on the right would be the working type.

   I wish more of the type on the right would come for grooming rather than the one on the left. Thick cocker hair is a pain in the butt the dry. Then again, the one on the right probably wouldn’t even need to go to the groomers.

   the longer coated one is the show type he/she looks just like my girl peggy. we do have mostly the show types here but the wockers are becoming more common in pet homes. cockers are fab dogs i have 2 , you would call them english but to us there just cockers. i wouldnt be without my cockers and i love reds, ive been told im mad for having a solid red and yes peggy is a bit of a cow but they are bootiful. i bet though that my 2 have one thing different to these 2. can you guess what that is.

   i was wandering whilst out with my dogs just now is there an working version of the american cocker spaniel. as surely that coat would not be helpful in the field or are they all clipped of to work. i expect there must be a working version as there usually is in most gundog breeds.

   In the British Isles, the breed is simply Cocker Spaniel, a different breed than what there is officially the American Cocker Spaniel.

   Working ability is not extinct in our American Cockers in the USA; there are a few show champions with Master Hunter titles. Unfortunately, there have been no AKC field trials for Cockers (either English or American) for a number of years, and the number of purely “working cockers” in the US is probably quite small.

   That pic shows clearly the fact that the English spaniel is a hound, it doesn’t differ much from other hounds like beagles or dachs. The hair of the dog seem to make people think spaniel is a “girlish” lap-dog, which it can be too, but more, it is a hunting hound and loves to track with its nose.

   so what we call the american cocker here in the uk could still work, even though it has a very, very showy coat. a coat that is longer than my english cocker. why would any person working there spaniel want a coat that long. what were they like 50 years ago surely they have only developted the coat for the show ring.

   Field-line cockers tend to have a longer body than the show-line dogs, which are more square. I see you’ve just made some new stuff on the Sussex Spaniel – a dog that has a total long & low structure.
