My dad found this black rat snake (Elaphe obsoleta) skin yesterday. The skin was 5′ 10.5″ long, but the snake that left it was likely smaller.
However, this is the longest snake species in North America. The longest on record was over 8 feet, but there are some unofficial accounts of indigo snakes (which don’t live anywhere near here) that have exceeded this size.
Black rat snakes are probably the most common snake around here. You often see then crossing roads or gliding across lawns or pastures.
It is a common custom for people to intentional drive over these snakes, even though they are nonvenomous and really don’t bother anything.
That is so sad. Snakes really need to get better PR. They probably eat more insects than any pesticide could get rid of.
