It’s not often you get to see predation at the zoo, but here it is!
This is an Asiatic black bear, which actually might catch a peacock in the wild.
This was not planned. I don’t think any zoo wants its visitors see the bird flapping about in its death throes.
Quite interesting, but natural behaviour. I’m surprised the zoo let the peafowl in the bear exibit. I noticed two peahens walking around in the background so it seems unlikely that the peacock was in there accidentally..
Mais, c’est la vie! It’s similar to when you see the animals mating. I love the reaction of some parents to their children’s questions. They’re so embarassed!
They likely don’t have much control over where the peafowl are. In our local zoo, the peafowl wander freely (well, they always have, they are apparently getting rid of them now), I imagine that is how it is at this zoo. Peafowl aren’t that easy to control, they tend to go where they will. Escaped “pet” peacocks have led to a wild peacock population in my area.
