Okay. This dog killing another creature.
It was a Rwandan poacher’s dog, probably what should be called an African village with some basenj for those are the trademarks of a basenji. It’s not clear if this dog barked or if it came from a population that in which the females were monestrus. If it came from one of those populations it would be a basenji.
Now onto the creature.
This dog died when poachers attacked a mountain gorilla family group near Karisoke Research Center. If that sounds familiar, it is because that was Dian Fossey’s post in the Virunga Mountains, near the Rwandan border with Zaire/ the Congo/whatever it is called now. These poachers killed Digit, a large silverback who was famous for making physical contact with Fossey. They hacked off his head, which could be sold as a trophy, and then chopped off his hands, which could be sold as ashtrays. (Why someone would want something that macabre as a decorative ashtray is beyond me.)
Digit managed to kill this dog, but the poachers managed to take him down with their spears.
So the dog’s death was a tragedy, but the death the creature that actually killed the dog is even more so.
