Jemima Harrison is not necessarily a designer dog advocate, but she has called for opening registries.
Automatically, one gets conflated as a designer dog person if you call for open registries, because it conflicts with the main religious tenant that breeds should remain pure at all costs.
Now, these people are villains, not because they mindlessly attack crossbreeders, but because they advocate for conformation types that cause health and welfare issues. They also defend a registry system that leads to genetic depauperation over the long term, which means less health in the end.
So yes, they are villains, and they are pretty strident ones at that.

I don’t understand how anyone can think an open registry would be a bad idea, the more information available to us the better decisions we will be able to make concerning breediung choises etc etc.

I don’t see what is the problem with crossing breeds. It is probably going to be healthier than a regular pug. He has some snout.
I am for anything that brings dogs appearance closer to the beautiful look of their ancestor, the wolf.
I think a registry should register all dogs, but not be the governing body. It should be a database, only.

The Camarillo White horses carry a mutation for dominant white (W). The founder of the breed – Sultan, foaled in 1912 – was the source of one of the formally identified forms of the mutation (W4). Eleven different W mutations in horses have been published, though it is rumored there are many more not yet published. Most are believed to be homozygous lethal (non-viable embryos).
Thanks thats what I guessed but was unsure although when i looked at some foal pics they looked like dom whites to me. It says that the colour gene that causes thier whiteness is only in that breed though so is that right there 1 of the 11 known genes to cause dom white is individual to that breed?
I love learning colour, I have a splash white, sabino buckskin boy here & have loved being able to test for splashed white now.
Yes, that particular dominant white mutation is unique to that breed.
The UK Kennel Club have opened registries from time to time. There a number of examples I could quote, and we still have the right to register some breeds with breed clubs who are outside the KC and to register those breeds with the KC if registered with the breed club.
One interesting outcross allowed ended up with the breeders not being able to sell their stock to other countries (America being one) because the ancestory of one bitch was unknown, and recorded as such on the KC paperwork. Equally where the KC has allowed and encouraged the out crossing of KC registered dogs with dogs of the same breed this has not been done due to a reluctance of the breeders.
As English setters are on the endangered list, should a breeder be allowed to breed from one if it has gone through rescue? I was told that a nice young setter was rescued from Ireland, but spayed and rehomed in the UK, yet a retriever from similar circumstances was brought into the UK and rehomed with a breeder who then bred from it! Double standards like this do not help endangered breeds.
