    It looks as if Suhail and I have reached a consensus of opinion on this, but you can bet that retrieverman will soon reveal the more interesting truth – that it is actually a tasmanian devil crossed with a melanistic red squirrel.

    Trying to be more sensible, I think the clue is in the white tip to the tail. Canid pups tend to be born with folded ears and dark fur; some staying that way and others soon nbecoming prick eared and lighter. So my final bet is that maybe Lauren up there is right – and using least words to say it!

    Maned wolf. They are born blackish. Red fox kits – at least in the images I have seen – are a dusky brown when they are really small.
