   I’m worried about November. I hope that the Wisconsin election result is not a harbinger of things to come. But I’m worried. For instance, take what is going on in the area where I live (Pike County, KY). It’s a coal-producing area, and there is an ongoing media blitz here against President Obama, and “pro-coal”. The problem here is, people are coming to equate “pro-coal” as meaning “pro-mountaintop removal”. People do have to make a living, but what are they going to do when the coal is gone? Tourism? They can’t ride the coattails of the “Hatfield & McCoy Feud” forever. And nobody is going to want to come to see a bunch of flat-top mountains.

     Well, I live in northern WV, and we’ve got Marcellus Shale to carry us through.

     Of course, that can be as much an environmental disaster as anything from coal mining.

       We have the Marcellus Shale here, too, and there are literally hundreds of wells being drilled, but I can’t see that the gas companies are paying any particular attention to the environment. The drilling itself is less destructive than mountaintop removal, of course, and as you have said, there isn’t anything more environmentally destructive than coal mining, but they rip roads through the forests and foul the streams with impunity.

   Even people who ought to know better, people who belong to labor unions, are talking-up Romney and talking-down the Democrats.

     In Kentucky, I wouldn’t be surprised. The same is going on here, too.

     Some of these people think Romney, because he was a kind of liberal governor of Massachusetts, will be just a good old Clinton Democrat.

     That’s what he’s trying to run as right now.

     Forget everything he’s said during the primaries.

   as the apparently one dissenter — if you think that people were competent to elect Obama, then they are competent to decide who they want as Governor of their state. I’m certainly not happy about Brown in CA (yes, the alternative was totally unpalatable), but I have to respect the fact that he was elected. CA has had two recalls — neither one resulted in any real improvement in the government of the state. Short of actual malfeasance, then when the people elect someone, recalls because you aren’t happy about it are uncalled for.
   Of course, if you don’t think that the vote of the people needs to be respected, then some system of “merit based voting” is necessary. None of those seem to have ever resulted in a better system of Government.
