What’s a Pussy Riot?
Pussy Riot is a Russian punk rock trio.
They are now facing 3 years in prisonfor singing a protest song in a Russian Orthodox cathedral in Moscow. The song’s lyrics included a call for the Virgin Mary to get rid of Putin.
They are currently being charged with “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred,” which sounds to me very much like an anti-blasphemy law.
Keep in mind that this is the same Russian Orthodox Church that experienced purges and suppression under communism.
But I guess free speech only matters when it’s your free speech that’s being suppressed.
Putin is a member of the Russian Orthodox Church, which is one reason why George W. Bush knew he could trust him. (LOL).
If we support free speech, we should stand up for Pussy Riot’s rights.
They are clearly being violated, and all good people of conscience should stand with them.
The Russian people have been fighting for human rights and democracy for a very long time.
It just always gets ruined by their horrible politicians.
And now, I bet this blog is banned in Russia.
So be it.

Putin is probably pulling the chains of countries in the EU where non-conformists are jailed for thought crimes like “hate speech” and “Holocaust denial.” In the UK alone see cases like those of “racist tweeter” and “emma west.”
That’s certainly possible.
You failed to mention that the “racist tweeter! conviction was quickly reversed on appeal during an outbreak of common sense.
The fear is that an electorate which could vote in a Dubya (allegedly) could also vote in a Romney – and then 50 million Americans without medical care can whistle for it.
Obamacare is not universal healthcare. It maybe covers half that 50 million. And I say maybe, because the states have to implement the Medicaid expansion on their own terms. That’s what came out of the Supreme Court ruling. Most of the states don’t want to expand Medicaid, which is health insurance for the poorest of the poor. It’s the main provision that would cover the most people in the law.

Messrs Manning and Assange might also have views on the subject of powerful governments punishing those who try to exercise free speech.
What they’re doing to Manning is pretty disgusting.
Let’s draw the line somewhere that puts self-serving, wealthy, obfuscating, hypocritical, low-life bastards like Romney far, far outside the boundaries of respectability. I thought GW Bush was awful, but Romney is worse.
