Hmmmm, wonder if there are any genetic disease factors associated with the coloration?
These are the raccoons that are sold in pet stores as “albino”. I think they are probably erythristic. As far as I know they don’t have any health issues associated with their coloration. They are pretty common in some areas. Not as common as cinnamon bears, but not really rare.
Are raccoons only found in US?
No. Their native range is from Southern Canada to Panama. In South America, there is another species of raccoon called a crab-eating raccoon, which is smaller and has shorter hair.
But raccoons have been introduced to Germany and have spread to the neighboring countries. They are in Denmark and fears are they are about to cross into Sweden soon. The Soviets introduced them to Belarus and into the Caucasus region.
They’ve also been introduced to Japan.
