These guys have cool temperaments, but they are SO WEIRD LOOKING!
Discovered or developed? This looks like another of mans monstrosities developed for the fad of the week dog fanciers. What are these dogs called, what info is there on them? I’m very curious as to what are.
Griffon Belge or Griffon Bruxellois or Petit Brabançon, divided by coat type. Though I don’t know the rate of incidence, they come with a myriad of fancy health disorders.
They are Griffons, rough and smooth

One thing sure, it’s about the 1st of April
I always get the Brussels Griffon and the Affenpinscher confused when I see them, probably because I don’t ever care to own either one.
Sasha was the name of my wife’s red rough coated griffon bruxelloise. She was delightfuly affectionate and playful and didn’t seem to suffer any breathing problems. She was a lively walker – until she got ill – and well able to keep up with the bigger dogs. But she was a one person dog, that favoured person being my wife. Sadly, little sasha died aged ten, from kidney disease, and now rests at the top of the garden along with a couple of wheaten terriers.
Did you know, the breed became popular with horse cabbies in 19th century Brussels. They would ride up next to their cabby and when he went for a comfort break etc the little dog would stand guard over the cab – they have quite loud bark for a small dog.
Anyway, when the shift was over, the griffon would take on his other role in life – in the stable with the horse overnight, where he was said to catch rats and mice. However, the only thing ours ever caught was a hairy house spider – and it took quarter of an hour just to disable it.
I believe the griffon is closely related to the affenpincher, maybe the pug and also with a bit of yorkshire terrier thrown in. I could be wrong, but that’s what I read. Our son thinks they are ugly little buggers…!
