Just yesterday I wished that I had a camera w/ me. I was walking my usual trail when I noticed a bit of movement some 100 yards out from of me, in the middle of the corn stubble. I looked more closely and lo and behold there was a herd of 6 whitetails that I hadn’t even noticed till one moved. Their natural camouflage is amazing sometimes.
The two most common deer species which visit our garden from the surrounding woods are the roe and the asian muntjac. Even though the roe has been here since the end of the last ice age and the muntjac was introduced less than a century ago, it is the muntjac which races ahead in numbers being better adapted for life in England, with its even smaller size, tiny swept back antlers and head down stance.
Although this specialised streamlined shape of the muntjac must have evolved all the better to get through asian thickets, it also exactly suits passage through the hedgerows which have surrounded England’s fields and gardens since the Land Enclosure Act.
