I don’t know why this type of fencing works, but white-tailed deer will not attempt to jump it.
They can clear just about any other kind of fence, but if you put up one of these, they will not cross it.
I think they might be afraid that they might get their hooves caught in the mesh.
But this kind of fence keeps the deer out.
Virtually every vegetable patch in West Virginia is now protected by one.
And it’s a lot nicer on the deer (and the dogs) than an electric fence.

This is where I first found the two deer from today’s the earlier post.
They wandered off into the woods just a few minutes after I took these photos.
I had an idea of where they were going, so I just went there and waited for them.
So if this was a neon orange snow fence, would it work a similar way?
Yes. But use the chipping sparrow photo to get an idea of how big the mesh has to be. Regular construction fences won’t work.
I wonder if it’s because it’s flimsy rather than a solid or taut wire fence with a clearly defined top? Or maybe they can’t judge it properly with the colour of the mesh blending in to the background? Deer don’t have great depth perception. They will jump other fences and often injure/entangle themselves, so I’m not sure what makes this quite low mesh so effective.
