The only reason I know the identity of what she was smelling is she marked over it.
Deep in the woods, too far from any houses, it had to have been a coyote.

What a lovely study of a dog using her nose. We can only imagine what it must be like to have such a wonderfully complex sense of smell.
Could you say a bit more about your reasoning? Could it not have been a fox or raccoon? Do dogs mark only other canine urine?
Dogs only mark to communicate to conspecifics, and in this unusual case, they consider coyotes to be a conspecific.
