Incidentally, as you may or may not know, gardening is a favourite hobby for many Brits and tv on the subject gets many many viewers. Well there is a much watched gardening programme every Friday evening and the presenter always had his golden retriever, Nigel, padding about in the background – until one time Nigel did not appear and this evoked thousands of enquiries as to what might have happened to him. (0ne in four British families is owned by a dog or three) Anyway, all the time Nigel was indisposed, Monty his owner and presenter of the programme had to start each show with a latest report on the dog’s health before anything about gardening could continue. Realising now that a lot of viewers watched to see Nigel as much as the gardening stuff, the producers ensured that from then on the dog became a major feature every week. It also turned out that Nigel was adept at various ‘tricks’ and so these have had to be demonstrated as well. Win win situation for the programme’s popularity!
