   We have a lot of those here in NH. The yellow spotted newt are rarer.
   Both are a good sign that a place is not over polluted.
   We also have tree frogs, bullfrogs and water snakes.

     Cope’s tree frog, bullfrog, Northern leopard frog, Northern green frog, spring peeper, American toad, and Fowler’s toad.

     Only one species of newt, but we have a ton of salamanders.

     We do have a yellow-spotted salamander, which is relative of the tiger salamanders (which don’t live here). It’s the biggest salamander we have.

       We have those,too. I love the peepers’ sound. My sister’s beach around the point on the lake has a hatch of tiny tiny toads every year. I can’t stop looking at them close up because they are perfectly detailed and amazing. I’ll try to take a photo for you.I don’t let the dogs go there and when I’m there, I walk delicately and spartanly on the beach, then.
       There’s a wonderful book by Mary Holland called Naturally Curious which is a month by month guide to New England. Do you live in NE?

         I live in West Virginia, which is not a tropical place, as some people believe. It looks like Eastern Massachusetts without an ocean.

           West Virgina is a wonderful place. I loved traveling there and the people that I met, were friendly. I actually was toying with the idea of living there after visiting.

       Britain is very badly off for amphibians: two frogs, two toads, three newts, no salamanders. Marsh frogs and bullfrogs introduced, low in numbers.p

         What do you and others attribute the loss to?
         I love hearing Bullfrogs from my windows:-)
