In the photo above, I want to explain my method for telling the sexes apart in Rouens.
The two ducklings on either side of the pekin are drakes. I you look at their breasts, you’ll noticed they have spots on them. Those spots are demarcating about the spot where their burgundy breast spot will be when they do molt into the adult plumage.
The hens all have streaks going down the breast. Also not that the two drakes have greenish bills, which will turn bright yellow as they mature. It’s not as obvious here yet.
The drake on the right is already getting some green sheen to the thick dark stripe going from the base of his bill over the top of his head.
We know the pekin is a hen because she quacks– very loudly!
