Do these little guys store up food for the winter, like the bigger squirrels? Some critters have been having really working over the hickory nuts and walnuts now thick on the ground here in southern Michigan, and i often see chippies dashing across the dirt road where the trees drop their fruit. The cars’ tires helpfully break the husks off the nuts.

  They are actually more extreme hoarders than gray, fox, and red squirrels are. They store them in chambers in their dens, one of which had something like 32 quarts of nuts inside, and they have outside caches too.
