Dare’s DNA analysis came back from Embark. She is clear of all genetic diseases that the company tests for, and she is not a carrier of any either.
She does not carry long-coat. There was possibility that she did, because long-coats occur on both sides of her pedigree.
She does, however, carry for recessive black. One great grandsire was a black dog.
Her genetic COI is 32 percent:
Remember that this breed is derived from very tight breeding at its foundation, and having a COI this high is to be expected.
In the MHC/DLA genes analyzed, though, she has high diversity, so she should have a good and effective immune system.
Her deep ancestry is pretty typical of European dog breeds. Her mtDNA haplotype is A361/409/611, which is very common in German shepherds. It part of the A1b haplogroup, which has been traced to the original domestication in Central Asia and entered Europe during the Bronze Age.
So we can find out lots of interesting things about purebred dogs through these DNA tests. Not only do we know a lot about her risk factors and carrier status of certain diseases, we know a lot about her deep ancestry as well.
I’ve been wanting to try the genetic testing on my dad’s dog for a while. Just for curiosity reasons really. She came to a Maine shelter from Mississippi with her siblings and was billed as mostly a “lab mix” but a lot of her behavior and some aspects of her appearance, plus the way my stepmother described the appearances of some of the other pups in the litter, lead me to believe that she’s much less lab than was implied by the shelter.
What is her “Wolfiness” percentage, Scottie? Last month my purebred Spanish Water Dog’s Embark results came in! Being a rare breed that only became officially recognized as such in the late 1970s, and the fact that his dad was the product of much outcrossing of distinct SWD lines, his COI is just 5%, also scored as high diversity and came out as clear of all known canine genetic disorders. He does have some sensitive stomach issues which may or may not be hereditary -.non of his littermates seem to have that problem. He scores 0.6% in Wolfiness which is low. To my surprise he is of a rare mtDNA haplotype – A541 – which is found mostly in African village dogs which I speculate that might have been brought into southern Spain by the Moors. The brief profile for the breed at Embark has a couple of errors, and I doubt that the breed has anything to do with Turkey.
@Kaz, I’m interested in seeing the results of your dad’s shelter dog.
This is the Breeder test, so they don’t test for that. However, both Anka and Quest were low at 0.6 percent.
