These wolves live almost entirely on rodents, especially that species of mole rat. If only Farley Mowat had gone to Ethiopia to study the dietary habits of these wolves, then his claim that wolves eat mostly rodents would have been correct.
I can remember when these animals were known as Simien jackals. However, they have been found to be far more closely related to Eurasian wolves than they are to any species of jackal. They also readily hybridize with domestic dogs, which is a major threat to their survival, and they are also quite susceptible to canine diseases, which are caught through contact with domestic dogs.
I should point out here that this species lives in a packs, but their pack behavior is not about cooperative hunting. They forage on their own but continue to live in family groups.
It is probably likely that young adult wolves cannot find suitable territory, so they remain with their natal packs for several breeding seasons. After a few breeding seasons, the accumulated effect is that these wolves live in a pack.
