I saw that piece quite a while ago. Very funny, and somewhat sad.
You do know that Molly Ivins had a dog named Shitface? She described her dog in a wonderful piece entitled “What’s in a Name?” here –

I can’t imagine that being the dog’s name. Maybe a pet name, like me calling my dog “Honey” or “Sweetie” or “Dumb Blonde,” but…I just don’t see the logic in naming a best friend something like that permanently.
Can someone explain the “Peter” reference? Maybe I’m just too young/sheltered to get it. I know it means “to fart” in French, but I didn’t think it was otherwise inappropriate…or was the lady just being a nutjob and trying to rationalize things?

Have you seen the Steve Martin film “The Jerk.”
The dog in it is named Shithead.
Peter and Dick can refer to the same thing.
Ah, OK. Thanks for corrupting a sheltered young adult :P I hadn’t seen the film. The only Steve Martin film I think I’ve ever watched was Bringing Down The House.
His banjo music sure is fun, though.
In all honesty, we call Mal Shithead occasionally when she’s way above and beyond Dumb Blonde, but we say it like “Shith-eed.” Her full pet name would be Shithead Dumbasshole (that would be “Shith-eed Doo-ma-SHOL-ee”, kudos to anyone who catches the nod to Shawshank Redemption). But we’re putting Mallory on her gravestone whenever that day comes.
