It is amazing how big their heads are in proportion to their body size.
It’s really much more than I’ve seen in “normal” newborn puppies.
I see why the Caesareans are so necessary.

the heads are pretty chunky.
whats a normal litter size for a bulldog?
did this dog have a C section then is expected to nurse the pups? ouchies..
With bulldogs, almost every bitch has a scheduled Cesarean.
They have average litter sizes– 4 to 6.
And yes they do nurse after the C-section.
My dogs have long skinny heads as adults and I’ve never whelped any other kind of pups, BUT generally the circumference of the head is smaller than the body, so the pup pops out pretty easily. The only times I’ve had to pull a puppy is when the front legs are back (malpresentation) or the pup is larger than normal.
I know people who have free-whelping brachycephalic dogs, but frankly just looking at the pups makes me nervous.
I remember reading an article in one of the show circuit picture magazines, where breeders who win place multiple ads that are so effusive towards judges for “seeing the best qualities of the breed in their dog or bitch”. The article was written by a longstanding breeder who was comparing the size of puppy heads then and now. The writer commented that the stress of the macrocephalic puppies on the mother during birth and to the puppies was not worth it. The writer wondered why these “newer breeders” would go to all that effort, just for a large head? I haven’t read of any breeder breakthroughs in developing bitches with wider hips, have you?
