   Cute pix. Question: Is techichi a name for a rodent? Someone on the deertype Chi list told said so.

     I’ve not heard that. Glover Allen used it for a particular type of small dog.

     It may be that someone is mixing up Hamilton Smith’s carrier dog of the Indians with a rodent.

     I think someone is mixing up breed origin myths here.

   I’m no expert but i think “techichi” is a word that Chihuahua Dog historians use for the Chihuahua Dog in history, not either type of living Chihuahua Dog.

   Wouldn’t be easier if every breed had a different name for the current fashion of the breed and a different name for the extinct original type?

   Like you could have “Golden Retrievers” for gold colored dogs that like to retrieve, and “Silky Cream Friendlies” for the variety which that label would obviously apply to.

   We could have “German Shepherd Dogs” for the herding field variety, “GermanPolice Dogs” for the working variety,” and “German Wobblies” for whichever type that label seems to fit.

   But i do see the reasoning behind calling the deer type Chihuahua Dog “Techichi”, it is like letting the name “bulldog” be used for a dog which i very serious doubt could pin a bull, and then giving names like “olde bulldog” or “olde time bulldog” or “Victorian Bulldog” to dogs bred to appear more like the original bulldog which was used in bull baiting.

   Chihuahua Dog history is fun because it seems to be a way of seeing into how Europians, mostly Spanish explorers, viewed the New World. What novelty they must of felt. Uneducated in most all sciences, they had to guess and invent stories about what they were seeing, yet they were right more often than later people who tried guess what the explorers saw.

   From what little i understand about the subject, it seems that the explorers returned home with tales of tiny little pet dog kept by people in the New World. While royals might have had small dogs, i doubt that the people in the taverns {pubs bars} believed totally in the idea of pet dogs, tiny enough to hold in your palm, some of which were hairless, and who were objects of religion. Must of sounded like a tall tale a shaggy dog story.

   It seems that people hearing about Chihuahua Dogs, assumed the explorers saw pet rats. Even today, redneck for Chihuahua Dog is “Little Rat Dog”.
