   I had a smooth collie mix named Bob. He was a very smart dog, but as a pup, he was forever trying to catch his tail. One day he got a brilliant idea – you could almost see the little light bulb over his head – and very slowly and cunningly circled and backed that pesky tail into a corner! He was able to grab it then, but it must have hurt, because he yelped and then snarled and bit that darn tail again. (I think that was when he finally realized that that thing that always followed him was actually attached.)

     Aw, bless him. He must have thought it had bitten him back the first time. My collie x retriever used to love chasing her tail as a pup. She’d often catch it mid circle and wrestle it to the floor in a knot of tail and legs. I’ve never known any of my shar-pei to do it nor my Tibetan Mastiff. I think it’s because their tails are neatly up over their backs so out of their eyeline for catching movement.

       I think a lot of it has to do with the Collie obsession to chase things. I’ve never seen one that didn’t chase anything that moves. Out pet name for them at the clinic was CarChasers :-).

       My BCx man gets startled by his tail and tries to chase it, and his is bobbed!

     By then they’ll be too long in the body to reach it and too knock kneed to turn in a tight enough circle.
