Eastern spotted skunk

This is a pet spotted skunk:

“Stinking spotted weasel.”

But it’s not a weasel!

I just showed my husband this video. He told me his dad had a pet skunk growing up in Montana.

Apparently it was friendly and purred like a cat.

    Tom doesn’t know the species.
    
    All he knows is his grandfather trapped a young skunk on their land and his dad (a kid at at the time) asked to keep it. They took it to a vet who removed the scent glands and that was that.
    
    It was the 60’s in rural MT. I don’t know if it was legal, but I doubt anyone cared.

      It probably still is legal.
      
      It used to be legal here until about two years ago, when the DNR stopped issuing licenses for pet skunks.
      
      My guess is it was probably a striped skunk. Western spotted skunk get only to the borders with Montana.
      
      But they are in Idaho.
      
      The Eastern spotteds are supposed to be here, but I think this might be an urban legend.
