I wouldn’t mind having one of those dogs. Much more slender and lighter than today’s, and they actually move instead of hobble.
The history buff in me has been sated for the day (even better: history buff + Schutzhund fanatic!). Thanks for posting this.

So you can still find dogs that are really similar to them. The original dogs were about the same size and type as the Malinois and other Belgian shepherds. The Dutch shepherd is similar but it’s a heavier built dog.
I’ve fallen hard for the Dutchies after going to a seminar at a kennel that worked mostly with them and Malinois. I’m just not in a position right now to deal with that much drive!
The Utonagan resembles the Tamaskan almost exactly…a quick search doesn’t bring up anything relating the two though. (Here are Tamaskan pics: http://www.tamaskan-dog.com/Galleries/Photo%20Gallery/photo-gallery.htm and compare with the Utonagan: http://www.britishutonagan.com/gallery.htm )
Seems that both breeds have a very similar ancestry: Husky, Malamure & German Shepherd. The Utonagan is from stock imported to the UK from the US, while the Tamaskan dog is allegedly from Finland, but the foundation stock was again imported from the US.
I’m just going to call them the same breed. Honestly, it appears that they’re just cosmetic anyway…for people who want the wolf look without the actual temperament and personality of a wild wolf.
